If there is one cake recipe you HAVE to try, it’s this one! It’s a classic basic that can be used for any birthday party theme, to great effect! In this case, we did two different Llama-themed cakes, and used two different icing recipes – one buttercream, one meringue frosting. To get the amazing height, we used TRIPLE the recipe amount (yes, its true) and a 15cm cake tin, and SIX layers. No half measures here! It was worth it – the effect is just so cool!

Llama Party Printables Cake Topper

Because the Llama party was for a little girl, we colored the sponge inside a gorgeous shade of pink, and we used buttercream icing for the version above, and the meringue icing for the one below. You can get BOTH Llama cake toppers for the same as one cake topper right here!

To get the braided effect and icing decor effect, we used a piping bag and various standard nozzles to create patterns. Black and white fondant made super cute llama eyes and a little heart shaped llama nose. The party horn blower was a last minute inspiration – and it just worked!

Llama Cake Topper Printable

For this one, we used the llama head topper, and a length of colored pom pom wrapped around the cake. Taaaa daaaa! Llama cake!

When you print out your chosen llama cake topper, it’s best to use paper at 200gsm or even slightly thicker. Cut out your topper, and either make up the llama hat and ears, or pop a stick on the back of your cut out llama head, and you’re done. Soooo easy!

Llama Vanilla Cake with Meringue Frosting OR Buttercream Icing

  • Author: Louise
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 1 double layer cake 1x

Description

A super cool birthday cake – this one was made for the Llama theme but the delicious sponge and meringue frosting or buttercream icing tastes good for any party theme! This recipe is tried and tested over many parties! Remember to chose either the meringue frosting or the buttercream icing, you don’t need both!

Ingredients

Scale

For the cake:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 ¼ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence

For the meringue frosting:

  • 4 Egg Whites
  • 200g Castor Sugar

For the buttercream icing:

  • 175g butter
  • 350g icing sugar
  • 3 tbsp boiling water
  • ½ tsp vanilla essence

Instructions

For the cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. Line three/ four mini round cake pans with wax paper. Grease the paper and the sides of the pan well.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, with an electric mixer, beat sugar and eggs together until slightly thickened – about one minute.
  4. Add sifted flour, milk, oil, baking powder and vanilla essence, and beat for another minute – just until the batter is smooth and creamy. Don’t overbeat. Pour batter into the prepared baking pan(s).
  5. Bake in preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until the tops are golden and a toothpick poked into the centre of the layer comes out clean. A single rectangular pan will take longer to bake than two round ones.
  6. Loosen the sides of the cake from the pan with a thin knife, then turn out onto a rack and peel off the paper. Let cool completely before covering with frosting, if desired.

For the meringue frosting:

  1. Place egg whites and castor sugar in a large heatproof bowl.
  2. Whisk to combine.
  3. Place bowl over a saucepan of simmering water.
  4. Using an electric hand mixer, beat egg white mixture for 15 minutes or until stiff peaks form.
  5. Use this to ice your Llama cake.
  6. Place one of our printable cake toppers on the top of the cake and decorate!

For buttercream icing:

  1. Place the butter in a mixing bowl and beat until soft.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Beat until smooth and creamy.
  4. Use immediately.
