Last year, one of my oldest and dearest friends was surprised with a delivery that was scheduled for the first week of 2024. That delivery turned out to be coming as a set of two in one package. Yes, my dear friend was pregnant with TWINS! A sweet pigeon pair. Her first babies, what a wonderful surprise!
When she told me, after a few moments of processing, I then responded to… ‘Leave the Baby Shower part with me.” And that was that… I was back in baby shower mode. Bearing in mind that it has been at least 6 years since I had much to do with planning a baby shower of one of my nearest and dearest, I was time to dust the cob webs off my magic wand and get cracking!
When Isla and I were growing up, Harry Potter was just starting to come out. Every time a book was released, we were desperate to get our hands on it, and then when the movies came out we always made a tradition of going to watch them together! Even when she moved to London for a couple of years, I waited until her next trip back to watch the movie together for the first time. Yes, we were total Potter fans! But we loved the magic and the fantasy of it all… why not! We all need some magic in our lives!
So, when it came to creating Isla’s baby shower for her little boy and girl on the way, I needed a gender neutral theme that everyone would love… So that was it, she was getting a Witch and Wizard Baby Shower.
For the invitation we created a magical, watercolor vintage vibe, which gives this design the versatility to use this theme for any occasion. With all the text being fully editable you really can create something very special to suit your occasion.
To be honest this theme is fantastic for Baby showers, but it is also great for Birthday Parties, Hens Parties or even a Potter Movie night. It is such a fun versatile theme and with our printables all the text is editable so you can really create any magic you like!
For the party table we wanted to create the old world charm with the wooden background and we printed off all different sizes of the ‘Acceptance Letters’ from Hogwarts and stuck them all over the backdrop to mimic the chaos of the Dursley House when the letters where flying around.
I then went ‘shopping’ in my house are my parents home to find all those little bits and pieces that give you the collected look of a Potter set. I grabbed some silver candelabras my Mom had and some ornate glass jars for holding candy. I found some traditional looking books to be able to stack to create height in certain areas. Then I went hunting through the trusty Halloween box to find some spooky bits and pieces, just to add that finishing touch of some skulls and bones to our Witch and Wizard party table.
For this Harry Potter party cake I kept it very simple with a high stack round cake with a off-white icing to add to the old-world look of the party table. I printed off all our printable cake topper elements and placed them around the cake. Then finished off the cake with a pair of Harry Potter glasses that I purchased off Amazon, or you can grab some from your local dollar store.
To compliment our cake, we also had an array of carrot cake cupcakes, topped with our off-white buttercream icing to create that vintage look again, and wrapped in the Gryffindor striped cupcake wrappers and topped off with some custom cupcake toppers. Cupcakes are always a nice addition to a party table, allowing guests to have a quick sweet treat before the cake is cut.
Coming up with all the different food ideas to match a party theme is always so much fun! From ‘Eyes of Newt’, which were just a favourite date ball recipe to ‘Unicorn Poop’, which we used white meringues for. You can use your imagination and go wild with the food. The Potter films really did spoil us for choice on name inspirations here.
We also scattered the table with gold chocolate coins from Gringotts and Jellybeans from Berty Botts, as well as a few golden snitch – Ferrero Roche balls with some golden printable wings we added.
Food labels are always a fun and creative way to bring the theme alive… put your thinking cap on for this one!
For our drinks, we went with a healthy option of Gillyweed, again inspired by the Triwizard Tournament. A classmate teaches Harry about gillyweed, a fictitious plant that, when ingested, gives its user fins and gills to swim and breathe underwater. For this we just had strips of cucumber cut up and placed in a large glass dispenser with some ice.
Lastly, for the party favors, we sent all our guest home with a little bag a chocolate coins from Gringotts bank, to snack on for the journey home.
We hope you enjoyed seeing all the details of the party, as much as we enjoyed setting it up for these sweet little babies!
