Firstly, you may be asking what is Dinosaur Day, actually? Well, besides celebrating these magnificent creatures and the imagination it stirs in both young and old, Dinosaur Day (the one we’re supporting and celbrating!) , has a story with a BIG heart behind it.
Cameron Mathieson was a boy who had both Cystic Fibrosis and Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy and sadly passed away in October 2012, when he was just five years old. He spent 3 of those years in hospital. He loved dinosaurs – or as he called them, Dowsers – and his favorite Dowser was a green triceratops called Troy.
His parents made history when they challenged the law surrounding disabled children’s benefit payments, which were stopped after a child spent more than 84 days in hospital. They took their fight to the Supreme Court and won. Contact a Family is the charity that supported the Mathieson family during Cameron’s short yet significant life. In tribute to children living with disease as well their families, Contact started “Dinosaur Day” as a way to raise awareness and funds for these families. Started on June 19th (Cameron’s birthday), Dinosaur Day is a fun way to get children and parents involved in rising for a cause that can change and uplift the lives of children living with disabilities and disease.
I’m Lou, Founder of Sunshine Parties and this story of Cameron moved me, as I’m sure it would any mother. I have 3 healthy young boys – I can only imagine how heartbreaking and difficult it must be to watch your child bravely fight each and every day. For this reason, we want to rise for all the children and families that can’t. Will you join me in rising for them too?
