September 11th is Grandparents Day, a whole day to honor and spoil those special grandparents in our lives. They do so much for us from helping with the kids, to lending an ear when we need to vent or giving out sound advice when we need it most. Grandparents share a special connection with our kids, so we love that Grandparents Day can help us celebrate their unconditional love and affection. Here are some ways to make Grandparents Day a joyous occasion.
1. Handmade Cards
Who doesn’t love a handmade card? A card is always a thoughtful and personal gift, grandparents near and far will love and cherish. We’ve made sending homemade cards easy this Grandparents Day with our unique printable Grandparents cards. Print out in black and white so your kids can color in the card and fill in fun information to see how your kids perceive their Grandparents. We’ve included a few different wordings of the card ranging from grandparents, grandad, granny and nana.
2. Outdoor Picnic
It’s not too cold out yet to enjoy a picnic in the garden or park on Grandparents Day. You can set it up really nicely with a cozy blanket, everyone’s favorite snacks and of course some comfortable camping chairs for the stars of the day. Add a personal touch with our picnic printables which includes an invitation, a gingham garland and editable chalkboard-like labels.
3. Interview Granny and Grandpa
The world changes so rapidly, our kids often wonder what it was like for their grandparents growing up. Even spring chicken grandies experienced a very different childhood to the world our kids are growing up in. Get your kids to interview their grandparents to find out more about what it was like growing up. Some interesting questions to ask are:
- Who was the president when you were my age?
- How much did {favorite snack} cost?
- Did you have a television?
- What were some popular activities for kids to do?
- What fashion trends did you follow?
- What was your favorite song?
- Who was your celebrity crush?
You get the idea! Keep it lighthearted and fun, and prepare for lots of shocked faces and giggles in the process!
Make A Secret Recipe Together
Does your mom or dad have a secret family recipe that the whole family always raves about? Ask them to make their special recipe with your kids in honor of Grandparents Day. They can give your kids a copy of the recipe to keep for one day when they’re older to keep the recipe in the family.
We’ve got some lovely editable recipe templates you can use to write out the recipes in a neat and legible way for your kids to keep.
Have a Sleepover
Last but not least, send the kids for a sleepover. A sleepover is a fun bonding activity for grandparents and grandchildren which often includes lots of spoils like staying up late, sugary snacks mom usually disapproves of and other fun treats. Make it easier for the grandparents by dropping off pizzas or providing breakfast so they only need to focus on the fun!
You can make it an extra special sleepover by sending along little treat bags for everyone as a midnight snack or movie nibbles. We’ve got these cute “sleepover sweeties” treat bag toppers with a bright doodle design as the perfect addition to a Grandparents Day sleepover.
We hope our ideas to celebrate Grandparents Day have inspired you to make it a special day for the grandparents in the family this year! Whether they’re seasoned grandparents or new to the game, every grandparent will appreciate feeling special with one of these meaningful ideas.
