A Titanic themed party is one of our most popular kids party themes amongst boys and girls alike! The story of the Titanic is fascinating, mysterious and in addition to the charm of another era, it’s no wonder our kids can get totally obsessed with the Titanic. Lou’s son Tom went through a serious Titanic phase a couple of years ago and Lou threw him a stunning Titanic party for his 8th birthday. You can read all about the setup here.
Now one of the main attractions on the food table was most definitely the Titanic cake, featuring white chocolate “icebergs” and a sinking ship cake topper. We’ve been asked many times how we made Tom’s birthday cake so we decided to give you a step by step tutorial to making this knockout Titanic cake yourself…and you’ll never believe just how easy it is!
You will need:
2 x Rectangle Store bought cakes
8in Round Cake Cutter
1x Blue food coloring (we used gel food coloring)
500g White chocolate
Grease-proof paper
SunshineParties Titanic Printable Cake Topper
How to put it all together:
- Scrape off all the store frosting off the cakes with a pallet knife and place in a bowl for later.
2. Use a cake round cutter to punch out 2 round cakes (We used a 8inch round)
3. Now stack one cake on top of the other. We recommend putting a layer of the frosting you removed off the cakes earlier in between the two cakes.
4. Now add some blue food coloring to the remaining leftover frosting to create your ocean blue color, and do a crumb coat.
5. Once you have done this first coat of frosting, place the cake in the fridge for 30 minutes to firm up, it makes the final icing layer much easier to apply and you get a much smoother finish.
6. While your cake is chilling in the fridge for 30 minutes, you can create your ‘Icebergs’ from white chocolate.
7. Melt some white chocolate on low heat. Once melted, smear onto some grease-proof paper in any iceberg-like shapes to harden. *TIP: Make a few extra in case they break or if you need to taste test.
8. Now take your cake out of the fridge and do your second and final layer of frosting.
9. Now peel your chocolate icebergs off the greaseproof paper and start to assemble.
10. Place the larger shards all around the cake base.
11. Then add your printable Titanic decorations into the cake.
12. Now you have placed your printables, you can add a few of the smaller icebergs around the ship and lifeboats on the top of the cake.
And there you have it! An impressive Titanic cake made from store bought cakes and decorated using our easy-to-use printable Titanic cake topper. Print the toppers out on white cardboard, cut out and glue/tape to toothpicks or skewers to pop into your cake when the time comes. Impressing your kids and party guests has never been easier. Shhh, we won’t tell!
