I cannot believe how the time has flown and my eldest son, Tom, has just turned 7. Tom is a truly unique soul – knows his own mind, thinks right out the box, and has passionate ‘obsessions’ about some fairly unusual things! It used to be the Titanic – he knows everything about the Titanic, what happened, why it happened and how it happened.
How did we get to Blimps and Biplanes?
So, after a fairly long Titanic period, the newest obsession is with vintage (1920’s – 1950’s) blimps and biplanes. In case blimps and biplanes are not as much your thing as they are Tom’s, a blimp (technically a “pressure airship”) is a powered, steerable, lighter-than-air vehicle whose shape is maintained by the pressure of the gases within its envelope. OK?
And biplanes, well, they are just cool, you know? So, we combined these two obsessions, along with Tom’s love of anything retro and vintage into a Vintage Blimp and Biplane Party.
And it turned out pretty well! Anything vintage just makes for cool design and gorgeous classic photos – check it out!
It all started with this cute, ‘boarding pass invitation’, with a stylish red and cream diagonal stripe backing design. All the text is editable!
I used 4 layers of chocolate cake to make this. Then, to create cloud-like ‘poufs’ of icing I made buttercream icing with white margarine and piped these babies on. Then I used this awesome, editable cake topper and cool ‘airmail’ striped cake wrapper to make a bunch of 7-year-olds very happy!
Sticking with the chocolate and buttercream icing theme, I made cupcakes and used these 4 fab topper designs and the red and cream striped wrappers to create this look. Cupcake toppers are editable so you can add a name, a message or an age number to make them special for your own aviation enthusiast.
I just adore these periwinkel blue macarons! AND the red ones! would love to tell you I made them myself, but I’d be lying! I bought them at a local supplier, and they were AMAZING! I did come up with the food label names for them though – Nimbus Clouds, and Burning Blimps! On this editable food label card, with two cool designs to choose from!
Did you know blimps have to have anchor bags, or they’ll never come down to the ground? We made our anchor bags contain a delicious mini chocolate bar, wrapped in some hessian, with red string. Most popular anchor bags ever!
More Food Label Fun!
I’m always looking for new and interesting activities for my parties, and this was a hit with all the kids! I used this biplane template to lazer cut some wooden biplanes (about 3mm thick), and provided brightly colored paints and brushes (on an old piece of fabric) so the kids could paint away to their heart’s creative content! You can use this template and cut the planes out of felt, or thick board as well! The ‘Paint Your Plane’ is one of 3 x Activity Posters that add decorative touches to the party!
And then, there was the soaring and swooping of these paper airplanes. It’s irresistible! Just try walking past a basket of paper planes and not give one a toss! Print the templates on this awesome blimp and biplane paper design to keep the party theme consistent.
You have to admit that watching little kids stagger around when they are blindfolded and dizzy IS amusing for all involved! Pin the Propeller on the Plane was a hit!
Never one to pass up a photo opportunity, we created a full set of photo booth props! Because vintage aviation is just so damn cute!
I rest my case! This is Tom (on the left) and his brother Will. This one is going in a frame!
These airplane party posters and activity signs are editable so you can make them relevant to YOUR party!
For party favors, we packaged up some blue bubble bath and called it ‘Wing Wash and Polish’. We’re all about sugar-free favors, to try and minimize the ‘flying’ around! You can print these favor tags on sticker paper.
I just love adding some decor details to my parties! These luggage stickers can be printed on sticker paper or plain board.
In fact, I made a party decor piece out of old luggage with various stickers, tags and signs – really added to the vintage feel!
What’s a party without a birthday banner? This blue and red design is editable to as many panels as you need!
